Diamond Quantum Plant Protection Silica Helps Rice Survive Typhoon Koinu’s 10-Level Winds
Recently, Typhoon Koinu swept across Taiwan, causing severe damage to farmers and crops across the island. The strong winds and heavy rains put rice crops to the test, particularly in terms of their resistance to lodging. During this typhoon, farmers from Jiaxing Village in Fenyuan Township, Changhua County, reported that they used an air sprayer with plant protection silica before the storm. The Tainan 11 rice variety they cultivated showed remarkable resistance to lodging, significantly reducing the damage caused by the typhoon.

Diamond Quantum's plant protection silica product contains 30% potassium silicate solution as its main active ingredient. Both silica and potassium fertilizers are known to enhance rice's resistance to lodging, which is particularly important for cereal crops like rice. The silica in the fertilizer is absorbed by the plant and forms a layer of silicon dioxide within the cell walls. This thickens and strengthens the cell walls, increasing the plant's toughness and reducing the risk of lodging. Potassium fertilizers, on the other hand, play a crucial role in regulating the plant's water and nutrient balance. Adequate potassium helps to strengthen the stems and improve the plant's mechanical strength, further reducing the risk of lodging due to wind and rain. Diamond Quantum’s R&D team has previously collaborated with Professor Zhao Yun-Yang from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology to study the effects of nano-calcium-silica fertilizers on rice production. The study measured the stem resistance to lodging during the growing and ripening stages. The results showed that treated rice had a lodging resistance strength of 388Kpa, significantly higher than the untreated group’s 226Kpa, further proving the effectiveness of silica fertilizers in improving rice’s resistance to lodging.In addition, Diamond Quantum's non-registered plant protection material—Plant Protection Silica—also helps prevent fungal diseases such as rice blast, powdery mildew, gray mold, and rust.
